Ventura County School Schedules for 2019-20

You know that school is about to start when you walk through Target and they’re practically giving away spiral notebooks and glue sticks for free.

Yes, the 2019-20 school year in Ventura County has begun. It’s a brand new year!

Just like Halloween and Christmas, the big stores started their grand advertising campaigns months ago. In fact, school has been “starting” since June, just after it let out for the summer. So this has been a long time coming. It’s also been a marketing overload!

Now we’re officially in the swing of it. So have a look at why this time of year might be a time of opportunity to you, your family and your business.

A Time for Bargains

Stock up now

This is the perfect time to go overboard in buying office supplies for school and business. You won’t see bargains like this all year.

If you have a kid in school and think you did your buying duty because you followed the teacher’s supply list, think again. They’ll run out mid year. You’ll be buying again, this time for full price. That 25 cent notebook will be $2.49.

So load up now. It can’t hurt. Besides, all this stuff has an indefinite shelf life. It’s not like you’re buying lettuce.

And even if you missed the bulk of the specials, most stores have even deeper discounted “clearance” shelves. Get it while you can!

Holiday Variations and Surprises

Oh, boy, they have changed over time!

The holidays are no longer “fixed” like when you were young.

Here’s one. Surprise! There’s now “Presidents’ Week” in February for some schools. An entire week off! We used to get only Washington and Lincoln’s birthdays. Then they squeezed them into Presidents’ Day, on a Monday. And now it’s expanded to a full week!

Here’s another one. Spring Break varies by school district. Moorpark’s and Thousand Oaks’ are at different times.

And one that keeps changing: Christmas break (aka Holiday break) also seems to be a work in progress. It’s now 2 weeks. I seem to remember it being 3 weeks a few short years ago…

So why does this matter if you don’t have kids attending local schools? For one, because if everybody’s out of town and you’re a business owner, things get really slow. You might as well plan around it.

Local traffic on freeways and main streets goes way down when school is not in session Just drive anywhere on one of the school holidays and see the difference. No yellow buses on the freeway. Super easy drive.
